Process Painting
Let's add a splash of Color!
Jump directly to RegistrationWhat is Process Painting (sometimes called "Expressive Arts")? In a nutshell it is painting for the experience of the painting process and not for the production of a final product. In process painting you are not painting for an external audience, nor for the satisfaction of an internal critic. It is not about technique, previous experience, artistic skill, but about feeling, energy, curiosity and intuition. While following a few simple principles, a facilitator will support your exploration into the mystery of color, light and dark. The experience of process painting might be playful, meditative, unsettling, energizing, even healing. Each journey into process is a unique experience and uniquely your own.

What are painters saying about the classes and workshops?
When I first decided to participate in April’s process painting, my mind took charge and I approached it from a “work” perspective. My background is graphic design, so here came my high standards and my pressure to perform. I was also concerned that she was going to tell me everything I was doing was wrong. Thankfully, I was way off track. April enabled me to come back into my body; she gently instructed me to let go and simply express whatever comes. As I returned to my inner state —again and again— I began painting what was inside. It was hard to stay out of my inner critic, but when it happened, I slowly came back to being in my body—heart, mind, and soul. April is made for this work; she has dedicated countless hours in courses and practicums. I’m inspired to see her honor her strengths and desires by doing such soulful work. Best of all, I know I am totally safe in her wise hands.

My process painting experience was surprising and inspiring. I also had lots of fun just letting the story come out through color and movement. You never know what to expect and that is part of the intrigue. April is clear and supportive throughout the process. She is fully present and has the skill and talent to be a wise and sensitive guide.

I have done process painting with April a few times and of course each experience was different. I am definitely not an artist in the “traditional” sense of what we think of as a painter; however, as soon as I was able to put away the idea of painting what I thought it “should” be and allowed myself to create what came to me, it was a very interesting, enlightening and good experience.
